Years ago I had a GRC-9 mounted between the seats in a 1965 International Scout. When leaving the house of a friend I had been visiting in southern Missouri we thought it might be neat to see how far out I could get & still talk back to him.
The antenna used was a slightly elevated Webster Band Spanner. We completely lost contact at about 5 miles out. I stopped the Scout, got out & tied the Webster back at about a 30 degree angle. We made it another 30 miles before I finally lost contact again. About 4 watts out AM on 3885.
Today I'm squeamish about operating a a new fangled, channelized, one button control, rice box while going down the highway for fear I'll end up in the ditch. Back then I thought nothing of zero beeting the GRC-9's trans to a received signal at 70 miles an hour.
