How many combat pix of the BC-1306, GRC-9, etc, etc exist?
I would be surprised that it was not replaced with something more functional.
---------------------
It was. The GRC-9! You should however already know, that the vast majority of
communications equipment in use in Korea was of WW-II origin. It's very hard to
prove that any of the so-called "Korean War Vintage" equipment made it into the
field during hostilities. The GRC-9 is one of the few exception & even that one
was not easy to prove(even though we know it was in production by 1945). The TBX
saw extensive service in Korea & elsewhere until such time as replacement by the
GRC-9 could be effected.
in favor of a jeep mounted TCS is not mine but one that I have seen before.
> The uninformed & pretty dumb.
--------------------
Yep, that's a line that really needs to be perperuated further.
You can not "ditch" a TBX in favor of a TCS. It can not be done. They have
completely different tactical purposes. One its a manpack portable, the other is
a mobile/fixed station radio. Naturally it may well be that whenever possible,
or circumstances would allow, the vastly Superior TCS would be the radio of
choice. Thats like saying that the GRC-9 was "ditched" in favor of the T-195, or
the PRC-74 was "ditched" in favor of the GRC-106! Just plain stupid.
"week point in attempting to establish communications between ship to shore"
Ask yourself this, if any other radio of the same, exactly same, type, would
have also proven to be a "weak point".
Yep, a four man crew to carry the TBX. How many did it take to carry the TCS?
Hmm, guess what, I six man crew was required for the BC-654.
This entire argument is observed!
Only slightly off topic. I have debated in depth Navy versus Signal Corps
equipment to a greatly heated level & I don't wish to again. But the fact is, at
the beginning of WW-II the Navy had in hand vastly superior communications
equipment for every conceivable application. The Signal Corps did not begin to
catch up until late WW-II. The real difference here is documenting the history
of this equipment. Unlike the Signal Corps which encourage & even sponsored
magazine articles that spotlighted their technological advantages, the the Navy
kept this all secret to the point of paranoia. As such pictures etc just don't
exist. How many of you have seen the picture captioned "Signalman disembarks
ship for landing with radio". It's a Marine with a TBY!
Several years ago at the 50thanniversary of the Normandyinvasion the Library of
Congress published a great deal of material that had never before seen print. At
this same time, they reprinted The Signal Corps" trilogy. I purchased everything
that had to do with the Marine Corps simply because of the pictures they
contained & the possibility of catching a glimpse of a radio among those
pictures. One radio that show a bunch, the TBX. & in may cases, those using it
are under fire.
