Thanks Gene! Yes, these pencil toobs are quite interesting. Are these tubes
available if they go bad in the PRC-6?

Eugene:

I followed Breck's idea for arranging the stacks of batteries in my own
PRC-6's with one exception. Instead of forming a lot of aluminum, I simply
used masking tape to hold the ten 9-Volt batteries together in one bunch and
the C-batt holders in another bunch. The 7-pin connector is attached
loosely at the ends of the batt wires (don't' forget to use heat-shrink
tubing around each socket pin). This collection rattles around a bit
inside, but you're not really using them in combat.

When I install the batteries for this set, I lay them out with the
C-cells (in holders) and AAA-cells (in one three-batt holder) on the bottom
of the case and the 9-Volt batts on top of these, just as Breck shows on his
web pages. When the batts discharge, I simply replace the C-cells in their
holders and tape up a new set of 9 Volt batts.

As someone else here said earlier, the engineering and manufacturing
that went into these early HTs, including the BC-611, is worth having and
getting to understand. It always amazes me how clever our grandfathers and
fathers were in their use of bearskins-and-stone-knives technolgies.

P.S. For another enlightening look at pencil tubes (used in the -6) check
out the VT Fuze project from WWII. You might want to google VT, Deke
Parsons and Applied Physics Lab.

I prefer usually for the "smaller" field set to
use home brew battery boxes. Battery power is very
quite and very reliable. Dollar store batteries
are my favorite but be sure and test them under at
  least a 25 ma load for a short(2 or 3 seconds)
  period.
PRC-6 and BC-611 see my web pages at:
