The sensors were only one part of a huge system that included over flight monitoring, long range microwave circuits and some of the very first use of computers for traffic analysis. This link gives a little idea of the airborne component of the system:

The McNamara line was a true technological marvel and excellent example of how we can use massive amounts on technology, money and resources to bomb trucks and bicycles. What was the end result on the war on logistics? How affective were the attacks on the Ho Chi Minh trail? I know I would not want to have been driving a truck on it. Have been told that truck drivers were chained to their trucks but do not know if that was true or fiction.
