John's suggestion may work. If the paint used was so-called aluminum
paint, I've discovered that it remains soluble to even WD-40 for quite a while
after painting (I don't know that that ever changes - just that I discovered
it to my chagrin a few weekss after painting an FT-237 and an FT-252 - I
don't know about something painted decades ago).
