You guys are precisely correct!  In the late 70's, Norm, K3RZU and I had 
acquaintances that had direct ties to ARC in the early 40's.  It seems 
that green was (still is?) the default color for sheet felt, as used for 
pads and other isolation (read: anti-wear) uses in the furnishings 
industry.  When material was required to protect the tubes, they got 
what was the industry "standard".  The hat industry used a thicker, 
un-dyed sheet felt.  If you ask why the heck we were even talking about 
the subject, back then, I think the company Norm was supporting at the 
time was doing some re-furb, or the like, on some military test (?) 
equipment that needed new felt material. Something like that...............
