Gene,
Maybe that should have been the title of your post.
That the audience appreciated your talk was a major omission in your
post, and shows that we are indeed not losing our sense of history.
That there were some naive questions show nothing about their sense of
history, just their knowledge. Though probing the audience is important
to see where they are in their experience, they were there to learn
something, not pass a quiz. Your job was to teach them that stuff.
I'll wager that when you started in ham radio you didn't know much about
'01As, ticklers, Marconi antennas, etc.
I'm sorry for my reaction.
I think your experience shows that there is hope for us after all.
Rather than being sad that your audience didn't know much about the
history beforehand, we should be happy that it went so well, and
encouraged to try more such presentations in the future.
Nice work, don't be sad.
