Never had much trouble with the M51 elements but the speech quality through 
these things is pretty crappy.   Are you experiencing low modulation in 
compairson with some other mike, M52 or otherwise?   If this is the only mic you've 
tried, note that there are several internal controls on the speech amplifier 
chassis, the settings of which significantly affect the modulation level and 
quality on this transmitter, see your TM.
