I removed the IF transformer last night and much to my surprise the
transformer was completely covered with a thick white layer of wax. I
did melt the bottom half away with a heat gun and that exposed the lower
coil, four solder points and two capacitors. Did hit the solder joints
again and examined the four wires and can find nothing wrong so it must
be open inside the windings. There is a spot on top of the bottom coil
that appears discolored and maybe the damage is their. The original
owner of this radio did a poor job of soldering lots of blue wires to
the battery connector and at some point applied some other voltage to
the A+ string and burnt out all the tubes in the receiver. When I tested
the tubes the 1R5 tested shorted on all elements and can only assume
that after burning out all the tubes they connected the B+ to the radio
and that’s when the damage occurred to the IF transformer. I will be
looking for an original replacement transformer but wanted to know if
anyone had a 455 Kc IF transformer I can get this week? The transformer
is the same size as any table top AC/DC radio from the fifties to early
sixties and although it won’t be an exact replacement I feel it would
work OK for the MRCA get together up in Gilbert. If anyone has something
they can cannibalize let me know and I am cretin we can come up with a
suitable exchange.
