I tried using garden trimming string (Weed Whacker) but I just couldn't
get the knot to stay put. The springiness of the material gave it a
tendency to snake itself out of any knot I made. I suppose one could use a
mechanical clamp of some kind to keep the end loops in place but that adds
to the complexity, weights, size, etc of what has to get rolled up onto the
spindle. So I went to the chain.
I want to test the strength of the plastic chain, just for giggles and
grins. Maybe take a link out of it and clamp it into a vise and hang a
bucket of water off it. Keep filling the bucket until the chain snaps. I'm
sure this is overkill as the chains look like they're about 3/16 inch thick
meterial and the tension needed to keep the NVIS mast erect is minimal.
Thanks for the note.
