I have an RT-70 and AM-65 PS that operates on 12 VDC (!). I haven't had it on the air yet, so I'd have to check it out to make sure it works. If it does, I could bring it to the shindig in Sept. I'll work on it over the summer and let you know.
Regarding the link on 3.885 AM, my guess is that the ground wave signal is dissipated over the terrain between the mountain site and the Fairgrounds. Vertical HF antennas tend to do that. Maybe an NVIS antenna of some kind on the mountain will work better. Something as simple as a low dipole (15-25 feet AGL) will launch a signal at a high take-off angle and the sig will come back down loud and clear. Those of us with 3.885 AM rigs should test this over the summer.
