[MRCA] PRC-10 low audio level?

Gents:

I just got two PRC-10s connected to batteies this evening and they both
seem to work. However, the audio volume in the H-33 handset is very weak
when I listen on either rig to a PRT-4 in the same room, even with the -10's
voume at max and squelch off. Even the signaling tone from the -4 is barely
audible with the handset a foot or two from my ear.

I can't imagine that that is the proper volume level for a battlefield
radio. I have the AM-598/U amp for these babies and I expect that volume
from it would be sufficient to drive an outboard speaker. But the low level
in the handset bothers me.

Can anyone out there tell me if I should be able to monitor the channel
on the PRC-10 with the handset hanging off my vest, away from my ear, or is
it normal to have to have the handset at my ear to hear it? I have another
handset to try, but just wanted you folks to set my expectations a bit
before I go tearing into the audio circuits. If this is an audio chain
problem, has anyone run into this before and solved it? Thanks.

BTW - Is anyone interested in seeing this PRC-10 at the MRCA meet in Sept?
I have the back pack and canvas belt that I need to carry it on my back. I
have to limit the number of radios I bring - have only two hands (and a
back), you know.
