There's a guy in Italy making an inverter.  Perhaps someone 
else can supply details.  Take a look at Breck's site:

He shows construction details for a battery tray that holds 
10 9-volt transistor batteries.  Given the way you're likely 
to use this sort of radio they'll last a long time.  The set 
in mine has served for two MRCA meets and a number of 
hamfest "nets."

I had good intentions of designing an A-B supply using a 
National Semiconductor Simple Switcher IC.  However, it's 
complicated by hash filtering and mechanical considerations. 
  I found it was better to just relax and build a battery box.
