All true!  I took some nasty corrosive acid home from college and etched the 
quartz slabs too.

However there was that moment in time when you go "too far" and the crystal 
stopped working  ):>(

Since then I've read in several Ham sources about changing the nominal freqs 
of such crystals in similar manner.  I have never done this myself, but it 
sounds doable.  The trick is the crystal holders have to be the ones that 
are screwed closed, not crimped like most crystals from ICM, Bomar, etc.
