Not a true statement!

Back in the early 1950s Motorola made a 10 meter AM
mobile rig for amateur radio use.  They were the old
"twin coffin" design (rounded top, receiver and
transmitter in separate cabinets).  However, they were
considerably smaller than the FM units.  Both units
were crystal controlled.

Somewhere, in one of the two attics (one over the
house and the other over the attached garage) I think
I still have an example.
