Can't give you specific model recommendations, but the old vintage stuff
you're looking for can often be found at thirft stores (Goodwill, Assoc of
Blind, Salv Army, etc.) and also church garage sales. Thing to do is (if
they'll let you) bring a boot disc, an inverter, and a few wallwarts to see
if the PC will boot and to see its config.
Too bad this didn't happen a few months ago, I recently got rid of a
breadboarded 386DX which I'd have gladly donated to your cause!
