[Motorola] MT1000 antenna problem

This is a very common problem on the Genesis series of radios. The usual
problem is a broken solder joint where the contact from the antenna jack
solders to the top left corner of the circuit board just below the antenna
jack. Remove the two back screws, the ones that hold the belt clip if you
have one. Then remove the two small screws on the bottom, NOT the ones that
hold the battery contacts they don't have to be removed. After removing
those four screws remove the front cover of the radio, then unplug the flex
to the speaker/mic in the front cover. Next thing to do is just slide the
guts out of the case.
Once you have the guts out you need to remove the back shield, just remove
the screws holding the shield and remove it, on some there is a small metal
spacer at the bottom end under that shield, you will see what i mean if
yours has it.
Now for the repair. Make sure the nut on top of the radio surrounding the
antenna connector is tight. Then check the pin to the circuit board, if the
solder is cracked just reflow with some new solder and your set. Sometimes
the pin breaks, if that happened use a small piece of resistor lead to
bridge the gap and solder it. I have done a more extensive repair that
involves removing the board from the frame and installing a short piece of
flexible wire in place of the stock pin, this works really good as well but
takes a lot more time and fiddling around to further dissasemble it.
The most common cause for this is pulling the radio off your belt by the
antenna, picking it up off the table or out of the charger by the antenna.
It flexes that connection and eventually breaks it.

Scott
