>From a practical standpoint, if the radio has no display, it is either a
model 1 or a model 1E. A model 1 will do only 12 modes (channels). A 1E
uses the secure/clear switch to switch between two zones of 12 modes each.
Neither the model 1 or 1E is capable of scanning. The model 2 has a display
and three menu buttons. This radio 2 comes in two different flavors. One
is 48 channels or 36 channels with scan. The other is 120 channels. If you
have a 48 channel model, that's all you'll get. If you have a 120 channel
model, it can likely be upgraded to a model 3. The model 3 has a display
and full keypad. To tell for sure, you have to open the radio. Opening the
radio is particularly easy: all you have to do is take off the two nuts on
the bottom plate. There is a tool made specifically for this purpose, and
it is recommended to use the right tool for the job, but a modofied standard
screwdriver will work. Once you have the nuts off, pull the radio straight
up and out of the case. Be careful to not put pressure on the PTT button
while removing the radio from the case. If it has the membrane switches for
a full keypad, all you have to do is put it in a model 3 case and reprogram.
If not, you have to do some board upgrades.

Hi, Yves:
The only way I know t's a Saber III is a label on it by the place
I bought it from. They're Moto shop. Since I bought them for ham
use, they don't have the original labels on them, so I can't find a
Moto model number on the outside. I guess I could get the codeplug
read. They all have the full front keypad (with the 3 keys (MENU,
SELECT, ENTER) and an LCD display above the keypad. The top has a
12-position channel (mode?) selector and an ON/OFF/VOL control. As
far as I know, all 3 UHF radios I have are Saber III.
I've never worked on a Saber of any flavor, so I don't have any
idea of how to open one to see if there's a model number inside.
Got any suggestions?
