Eric, There may be better deals than an MT-500.  The band-splits in the
MT-500 are narrow.  It may be difficult 
to convert the RF components to another band-split, not just new channel
elements but working over the "innards".  
You might look for a used VHF Saber and obtain the RSS or "plus ten" and
program it.
