The Maxtrac and Radius GM300 equivalent require a line to be grounded to 
enter scan mode. When you have a mic plugged in, older microphones need a 
grounded microphone holder, and newer mics just detect that the microphone 
is in the holder.

If you want to scan without a mic, you will need to jumper pins 3 and 4 
(HOOK and GND) on the mic connector. See the schematic here:

You can carefully take a piece of wire designed for a crimp-style RJ-45 and 
connect the two pins together, so you have no wire exposed.
