[Motorola] Astro Saber from parts?

I saw a fellow (possibly on the list here) that was selling an Astro Saber with what seemed like all the options.  He stated the flashcode and that it would do IMBE and many other good things.  What i'm wondering is how you would go about doing this.  He stated that it was a 100% parts built radio.  Is this maybe a cheaper way to get into this kind of radio?  How do you get a serial number for a radio that was never assembled by the big M?

I'd really like to do some IMBE with the guys from Batlabs at the Dayton Hamvention and the cheapest way I can do it the better.

Any suggestions?
