[Motorola] Motorola Reciever Strips

Hi Folks,
I have an idea to set up some dedicated receivers for some
(actually 3 pairs) of VHF lo frequencies used by out highway patrol
here in California. There are of course several ways to accomplish
this, but one (suggested by another ham) was to obtain some VHF lo
Motorola receiver strips and dedicate each to a particular channel.
He though they would be fairly cheap...especially if I didn't mind
the tube versions (which I don't at all).
A couple of questions:
1. How obtainable (and costly) would be several strips (probably
3 for right now on lo). Tube type would be fine as long as docs are
available. If the idea pans out..maybe another 1 or 2 lo and 2 or
three vhf hi's. Sources? Anyone in South central California know of
some Motorola/GE tube stuff being given away? (This was a lead I got
and have been unable to follow up on with the original poster.)
2. California CHP's radio system is actually a sort of half-duplex
with base and mobiles on different frequencies. Would it be possible
to diode switch two crystals in one strip at a high rate, stopping
when one channel was active? (a poor mans 2 channel scanner from a
receiver strip.)?
Thanks for whatever help you can offer.
