According to the service manual for the TU546 it was for testing receivers
and transmitters with the 11 pin metering plug. This unit replaced the
P-8500 and P-8501 test set. The front of the unit has a square 20 pin
connector. There is a cable that has the mate for this connector on one
end and a male 11 pin metering plug on the other. My manual is issue C and
is dated 3/7/61. The MICOR uses a rectangular mettering plug. There is a
cable for this test set to be used with a MICOR. The MOCOM-70 used what
looked like a relay connector metering plug. There is also an adapter
cable for this. I have both of these cables. There may be other cables
for this test set. These would have been made as newer equipment was
developed. This test set was replaced bt a test set that has a model
mumber of S followed by 4 numbers. The 4 numbers tell the installed
options. Motorola appears to have standardized on the 20 pin connector for
the test set so that existing cables could be used with newer test sets as
they were developed.
Hope that this helps. Looks like the test set was originally used with the
G strip transmitter and receiver.
