Glenn: ALWAYS check a unit out before you start conversion. That said, my
experiences differ slightly from those so far. I've worked on many that were
used in paging service (450-460 units) and this should be the same as the
one you have. I have had several Tripler/LL amps and one circulator go
bad(mobile circulators are not quite as robust as the base unit). I have
moved several down to the ham band, and all have moved down fine (442
transmit is the lowest I have gone). The most recent was a C74 model, and I
get 60 watts after the duplexer. The 470-512 units are not so forgiving, but
the PA and Tripler/LL amp usually make it. While the MICOR is a fine piece
of equipment, it can be tricky until one understands the power control loop.
Also, for the record, in the mobiles, my experience has had the controlled
stage transistor fail the most. Perhaps this is the one to go for in the LL
amp. EDITORIAL: When Motorola did not recommend field repairing the module,
this was before surface mount soldering equipment was generally avauilable.
If one has access to this equipment, repairs should be possible IF the parts
are available. Remember, this stuff came out over 20 years ago. Good
luck.--Mike, WV2ZOW.

Subject: [Motorola] UHF MICOR Base
Our radio club has a UHF MICOR repeater that was donated to us. After a lot
of work, we got it on the air. This only lasted a day. After
troubleshooting the transmitter problem, we feel that we have a
Tripler/Amplifier (TLE1603B) problem. We have zero power out of this
module, where we had 1.6W out when the repeater was working. We have about
400mw input at VHF into the tripler.
Does anyone have any experience with repairing this module? The manual
lists it as not field repairable. The module is currently inroute from the
site to my house for investigation as to repairability.
Does anyone know where a spare might be obtained?
Thanks
