The physical implementation of DPL by Motorola was very similar to PL.
The DPL encoder/decoder boards plugged in to the same location as the PL
boards (you got one or the other).  The DPL code (just a number) was 
set by a code plug which looked almost like the code plug for the 
newer synthesized PL boards.

For the Motorola boards you had to buy a code plug for your 
specific DPL code or for your specific PL tone.  Changing to
a different code was expensive.  Third party add on boards often
use DIP switches, so you just set the code using a table of settings.
