[Motorola] RSS Problem in Compaq Laptop

I'm running DOS versions of Astro-M, Astro-P, Quantar, Spectra, Saber,
Kenwood in a Compaq laptop
under Win 98. 
Frequently, there are error messages in the Astro RSS "no ack" when trying
to read a radio.
Uploading and cloning Astro portables has less errors.
I've had a few error messages using Quantar RSS.
Saber-Spectra will not read at all, and have "timeout" or "busy" errors. 
Even Kenwood DOS RSS acted up a few times.

I've tried the RSS as a DOS shortcut, as well as booting up on DOS.
Shortcut has fewer 
errors but is still not acceptable.

The RIBs and cables and radios are fine.

Anyone have suggestions?
