FRANCIS R. HUGHES
ATHOL -- Francis Robert "Frank" Hughes, 71, of 223 Union St., died Sunday, June 16, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family.
Frank was born in Athol, Oct. 8, 1941, the son of Vincent C. and Pauline C. (Guilmette) Hughes.
He graduated from Athol High School in 1959 and has lived in Athol most of his life.
Frank worked at the Former Union Twist Drill for 20 years later moving to Rumford, Maine, for nine years where he drove taxi and volunteered for the Head Start Program. He returned to Athol in 1991 where he has resided since.
Frank kept very active, being a member of Our Lady Immaculate Church where he also served as a Eucharistic minister, and was a Hamm radio operator, being a member of the Mohawk Amateur Radio Club, also enjoying CB radios. He was very active with the many events of the radio club, volunteering at many area events.
Frank was an avid hunter and fisherman always enjoying fishing with several of his children and grandchildren, he liked fly tying and made many beautiful wood carvings. While living in Maine he also enjoyed attending the rally road races. Above all of his activities Frank most enjoyed spending time with his large family.
He leaves his eight children, Michael Hughes and his wife Andrea Barlick of Troy, N.H., Robert Hughes and his wife Cynthia of Athol, Pauline Hughes and her husband Jamie Narkeuicius of Athol, Richard Hughes of Orange, Jennifer Sanchas, Lane Hughes and Gary Hughes all of Alabama, and Adam Hughes of Maine. He also leaves his partner, Ruth LaPointe of Athol; 19 grandchildren; a brother, Michael Hughes and his wife Jill of Canton, Ohio; and many cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday, June 20, at 11:30 a.m., at Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, with the Rev. Fr. Krzysztof Korcz, pastor officiating.
Those attending the Mass are asked to go directly to the church.
Burial will follow at Gethsemane Cemetery and there are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St., Athol, Mass. 01331.
Higgins-O'Connor Funeral Home, 146 Main St., Athol, is directing arrangements.
