[MohawkARC] Comments on Trailer

Due to my wife's surgery last week, I do not think it is prudent that I
leave her alone to attend the Wednesday meeting of the club. So with
your permission I would instead like to make my comments via this email.
Let me say I have never driven a vehicle with anything in tow. But my
brother (now deceased) has crossed the United States several times with
a house trailer in tow. When he purchased his most recent trailer new,
he specified that the kitchen be installed at the front rather than the
conventional aft. This was for stability when in motion. A trailer
with its center of gravity too far toward the rear is more prone to
fish-tailing or even jack knifing in a strong crosswind, uneven road
surface, or on steep downhills such as we have in Worcester County.
Once I witnessed a pickup truck towing a small trailer fish-tail and
eventually spin the towing vehicle perpendicular to the Rte 128 lane it
was in. This was on a dry road with a minimal down grade. The trailer
had been improperly loaded.
When I review the proposed layout of the club trailer, I see that the
power units are in the very rear of the trailer. I assume these are the
heaviest items to be stowed. If so, I respectfully suggest that the
trailer committee take a second look at the layout to see if there is
any significant risk of an accident when in motion and whether any risk
can be minimized by relocating any heavy objects forward.
