It is not as convenient, but once I bought enough for several bands I didn't want to switch methods. Also the F-150 I am using is a company truck so there was that limitation. For a while I used them as dipoles at an apartment. Years ago I had the Hustler antennas on the car. Used them when we moved to Alaska for three years. The Kilowatt Hustler antennas are probably better than the Hamsticks. I have a friend in KY who uses the Tarheel. If I ever get my own vehicle, I will use the Tarheel on his recommendation. To speed up antenna configuration to change bands, I have quick disconnects on the masts on both ends. The lower mast quick disconnect is for the vehicle mounting, and the upper one is for the coils being used. That makes it easier to put them on and off the vehicle so they dont get "borrowed" when I go into a store or visit friends. Have found the longer mast whips and the higher power coils are more broad banded than the other options too. Thanks for sharing your info ....73 On 4/11/2020 1:45 PM, Tim wrote: > Howdy, > > I just run Hamsticks (MFJ version HF sticks). > > It is not as convenient, but once I bought enough for several bands I > didn't want to switch methods. I had the Hi-Q on my 2004 Chevy Silverado for well over 100,000 miles before the Lexan cover cracked due to intense cold and I had to have it repaired.? I'm presently in the process of figuring out how to install the Hi-Q on my RV.? Once I switched to screwdriver antennas, there was no turning back for me! What I like about the Hi-Q, is that the tuning mechanism is fully enclosed and not affected by weather.?? I have seen the Tarheel product, and recently purchased their mounts to put the Hi-Q on the RV.? They are nice folks to deal with and make a quality product. Interestingly enough, Jerry Sevick, W2FMI, did a detailed study of the Hustler KW and low power coils, and found that the low power coils were more efficient than the KW version.? That's opposite of what you would expect.? I don't know if Jerry ever published that information? If you don't already have them, get copies of Don Johnson's, W6AAQ, books on HF mobiling.? The two books have a wealth of information in them about operating HF mobile.? I believe they are readily available in pdf format.? If you can't find them, drop me a note.
