I'm easy to follow, Bill. Lots of folks are doing even more interesting
things but you're right about the roots. I got my ticket in 1961 and my
mentors got theirs in the 1920s. One side effect of this is a love of 1930s
equipment, both homebrew and store bought. Since WW II surplus was mostly
1930s designs it fits that every rig I had from then was some combination of
surplus (usually WW II) and homebrew. Further, I only ran CW, mostly on 80
& 40m, with an output of 50w at most and usually closer to 10-25w. I also
never had space for a decent antenna so I got rather good at working with
short verticals, mostly top loaded, and random wires up to around 50-60'.
It's only recently that I've gotten into commercially made ham equipment and
things with mic jacks that were actually connected to something. Even so,
I'm not a big fan of VOX* or break-in so T/R switches in any of several
forms will be added where they don't already exist.
* I used to listen to the phone portions of the bands now & then when things
got slow and got quite an earful when assorted folks' VOXs tripped when they
shouldn't have. This included odd bits of profanity, highly "personal"
conversations that had no business on the air and a couple of rather loud
spousal arguments. That's what made me decide that VOX was definitely not a
good idea.
> Good Luck!
I'm going to need it. This "disabled" bit tends to slow me down a lot but
where there's a will, there's a way ... and my middle name is WILLiam. ;-)
> Sounds like a ARRL article in this some where ... more than one I bet
Nah, aside from my old activity reports, I only write fiction ... and even
they tended to reflect my preference for that. OTOH, the occasional
progress report here and elsewhere wouldn't be out of the question. :-)
Best regards,
