[Mobile-Portable] Winter Prep, and HF Mobile Freqs?

Oh, I do know about cold. I lived on the mainland for 55 years, mostly in
Pittsburgh but with some time in Toledo as well. (I was born in Buffalo but
don't remember much of it since we moved when I was 4.) Anyway, routine
vehicle maintenance got extended to include any electronics aboard. While
"mobile" for me consisted of finding some nice hilltop to park on and run CW
for a while it still involved equipment that would find any possible way to
become an irritant if I let it. Sooo I didn't.

Side note: Until I moved here, I never owned a rig that even had a mic jack.
Well, not one that was connected to anything, at least. Now I have things
with mic jacks that actually are functional and a dearth of mics except
carbon ones for military gear, and even that's more for display purposes.

Now, after 13 years since moving here, I have a vehicle into which I can not
only install a mobile rig between the front seats but can also install a
small operating table behind the driver's seat for ... hmmm ...
fixed-portable(?) operation at some of the beach parks. It's a 1994
Plymouth Grand Voyager van with the back two seats removed and buckets up
front. My choice for the "up front" rigs includes some oldies but goodies,
one each HW-101, SB-102 and TR-4. (I'm not sure how I'll fit the Triumph in
there but I'll give it a good go. <BG>) All three need work so it'll be a
while before anything's installed. I don't yet have a mobile power supply
and I'm kinda sorta on the hunt for an HP-13 no one wants to slide under one
of the front seats to keep it out of the way.

Ah, but there's more for up front. I have a WRL Meteor and a Gonset Super
Six (actually three of them from which I'll make one operable one) that seem
so purty together. Again, both need a bit of help but that's kind of how I
accumulate things. They're cheaper when they're not quite at their best.
Anyway, the plan, such as it is, is to take a 3-6 MC command receiver that's
already been hacked and completely remove the front end then use that part
of the chassis as a mounting shelf for the Super Six. The IF strip and BFO
will get retuned to 1430 KC and the IF given a wee bit of help in the form
of a touch of regeneration to help skinny it up a skosh with a few other
odds and mods to make the whole thing more a amenable to being a receiver.
I may even have a power supply that will work with it. Glory be! All of
this should fit under the dash over toward the passenger seat which will
make it amusing to operate but the ancients (snicker) managed so it should
be doable.

The 'tween the seats rig will got to one of two Hustlers with the second as
of yet uncommitted. The 60s AM/CW/DSB rig will go to an appropriate
antenna, a Webster Bandspanner. In both cases, I'll have to get out to
change bands so I'll probably stick to a single band for each, at least for
a while.

What goes on the operating table behind the driver's seat? That's for
another time and probably another list. <EG>

Best regards,

Sure, and that is a great way to think of it ....

But .... living in the north, I have learned I HATE working on a ham
mobile station in the cold, even inside a garage .... hi hi

But, good point. My habit is to due this kind of stuff and more twice a
year. Just before and just after winter.

It was also hoped this email would bring the members out of the weeds
.... hi hi

We need a few HF mobile frequencies .......
