PRM9000 http://www.geigercounters.com/PRM-9000.htm is a good starting 
geiger counter. Geigers will not tell you what type or radiation is in 
the fish though, which is important.

A simple short scan is too short a time. It would take ten minutes or 
more to do a good scan.
