That was rude of gmail! I did NOT want to send quite yet!

It's probably overkill, but I like the Collins 170L/180L design - or
the RF path, at least - with the Z-match a close second. (I also like
autotuners like the Collins units but that's a separate subject.)
They both handle electrically short antennas rather nicely and that's
all I've ever used, mostly due to space constraints. The Collins
design requires high voltage components but the Z-match can be built
using receiver variable condensors for output power up to something
over 100w.

This isn't Master Mobile's Z-match but a more recent matching unit of
the same name. I first found it in an Australian source but
variations have been made all over since. A good starting point is at
<http://users.tpg.com.au/users/ldbutler/SingleCoilZMatch.htm> which
also has URLs for variations on a theme.

I've been sniffing around for a long forgotten and unloved Collins
autotuner but people seem to want real money for them and my VA
pension can't support such wonderfulness. That's like a Master
all-band coil; I don't expect to find one in this lifetime.

What the heck is that huge thing sticking up in the air on the back of
the pickup and how many overpasses have lost out to it? :-)
