[Mobile-Portable] 96 Ford Bronco fuel pump

Wow. I had no idea that any plastic fuel tanks for oem use existed. I only
knew of them for aftermarket/auxiliary use. And your test as described
would certainly seem to prove the fuel pump as a culprit.
As appealing as it is for any number of reasons, HF mobile can
certainly be a challenge. The best that some hams may be able to do is to resign
themselves to the fact that the motor vehicle is a transporter of the HF
equipment rather than a practical platform for operating while underway.

Joe,

Generally you would be correct with a metal fuel tank. But in my case
1996 Ford Ranger XLT 2WD has a plastic fuel tank so it did nothing to
shield electrical noise emitting from the fuel pump. I suspect the 1996
Bronco fuel tank is also plastic. Ford did have a factory RFI filter
they installed when they received complaints, they had to drop the tank
to install it. When they did mine they did not locate up the gasket from
the tank outlet lines and pump acess hole properly so on a fill-up I
would get a strong smell of gasoline.

Seems my 2009 Toyota Tacoma has a plastic tank too. I have not tried the
706MKII to see if its fuel pump emits noise like the Ranger did. The
noise from the Ford's fuel pump was over S9 made HF operation darned
near impossible. I had the entire truck bonded, the antenna was on the
left rear corner, power direct from the battery. Just turning on the key
would raise a lot of noise in the transceiver.
