Joe , Thanks for the tip. After the fuel tank is back on line I will hunt for any other noise problems. Its been 10 almost 7 years sice I drove the Bronco , "Its been garaged" , went hf mobile once with Hustler's / 751A Icom and I dont remember much about any noise problems. Im going to be running a IC-7000 , Magnus Metron MLA-1000 and a Scorpion 680 series antenna. Randy N5WV

Just some theoretical thoughts here -
If the fuel pump motor is noisy, then the noise would be considered as
coming from the supply wire leading to it. The pump itself is located
within the tank which would act as a shield, therefore the only
radiator left is the wire even though the pump is generating the noise
in the first place. The best location for any filters for the pump
would be at the tank in order to minimize the exposed length of
unfiltered wire. This would hold true for an OEM filter or with a
homebrew one. If I were to build a filter for this purpose, I would use
a pi configuration. I wonder what the OEM one consists of.
In my experience with Ford (actually a Grand Marquis) the engine
computer was the proven major noise contributor, with the fuel pump
contributing nearly nothing to the noise floor. Everyone (other hams)
told me to suppress the fuel pump, but it just wasn't the case in my
particular situation. I'm not saying that every vehicle works out the
same way, just my experience. BTW, my Ford dealer bent over backwards
to help me with my noise problems even to the extent of replacing the
engine computer with a new less noisy version for FREE! Yay Ford! I'll
remember that as a future potential customer.
Best,

Some auto companies provide a RFI suppression kit
for the fuel pump, IIRC - ask.
FYI - The fuel pumps that I have had always came
on for several seconds to pressurize the fuel
line as soon as I turned the key on. I didn't
have to engage the starter or start the car -
just turn the key. They made a slight vibration,
and I could actually hear them running. Would
have made it easy to see if they were causing
electrical noise by themselves. Don't know if you
can use this technique now with the tank out.
