jerry ,I totally love the 857--i am menu challenged (another way of
saying an idiot), and once I set every thing in memory, am fine with it.
Ive had two 706s and performance wise, are about the same as the 857.
I do think the 857 manual is better written.I keep mine in the truck.
you can not easily work fsk with the 857, and if you work cw Id
recommend the 500 hz filter-the 350 filter is just too tight-I do not
like the dsp filtering on cw--again too tight for me though I used to
listening to even tighter filters on 160 cw.
the display on the 706 is bigger and much easy to see.
based on price alone,, 857 most bang for the buck..
would also recommend the ldg tunner(any) in consort.great tunners.
i use hustler antenna with resonatrors--work better than ham stick
though I have and also can use them.
