The reason for the corona ball is to reduce arcing from the tip of my  
antenna when I modulate.  You can actually understand what I am  saying.........a 
modulated  (four inch long) arc.  "My 1100 watts is  jumping for joy".  It also 
helps to reduce static noise when receiving  while in motion.  The ball on the 
tip on auto AM radios is not just to  protect your eyes, it helps reduce 
static when receiving broadcast  stations.  Any antenna moving through dry air 
creates an electrostatic  charge, like when you walk on carpet then touch a door 
knob and receive a  shock.
