The 555 is a very versitile thingy.

And this looks like a good idea at first glance, but won't work well in
the real world, Dave,...only OK if you don't mind a lack of precision.

Here's the problem... you set the timers on a hot day. Then a rainy day
comes along and the mechanics slow down...no precision.
But, if one does not mind endlessly readjusting the timers ....
