[Mobile-Portable] Thoughts on inverted "C" on car?

I brought this idea [similar] up on the glow bug list
and they took the time to explain how back in the ol'
days there was a lot of 160 meters ran by taking a
whip type antenna and bringing the top down to the
front bumper.
There were two methods;
a) Whip is insulated [top] from car
b) Whip is electrically connected an forms a loop
I can see if I find some old notes or maybe some of
the more experienced mobileers can elighten us...
