I like the Icom 706, new or used, make sure that your model has DSP to help  
in noisy situations.  The 706, with a simple mod, could be used as a  back up 
HF Marine radio in an emergency.  It would not be legal, but you  would have 
to be "rescued first"  before you could be fined.  I  would consider a 
screwdriver type antenna, so changing bands is easy and it  could be moved from the 
car to the boat with quick disconnect couplings.   Hi-Q has several nice 
antennas and the disconnects.  I like the larger coil  model 5-80, but the smaller 
coil versions are less money and slimmer  looking.
