Walt,
You're correct. If you are using a vertical (common quarter wavelength)
the Brewester angle is going to be quite great. For a dual bander you might try
a "J" for 2M which will work OK also on 70cm. This will put your main lobe on
the horizon as it is essentially a dipole. As for gain in a mobile
application that is going to be hard to come by. You need a long yagi and you need
height to get the main lobe on the horizon. Neither of these come easy in a mobile
setting, and having it dual band - further not easy! If you can live with a 5
dBi omni that will operate on both 2M and 70cm the "J" is the answer.
