[Mobile-Portable] VW New Beetle installation

Has anyone setup a mobile radio like an Icom 706 into a Volkswagen 
New Beetle (2001)?

I can not find any kind of a passthrough from the engine compartment 
to the passenger area for a 12 volt  20 amp power line.

There is a power busse below the steering wheel that seems to have 
high current, but VW advised me not to touch this at the cost of 
voiding my warranty. Has anyone had any experience with getting power 
from the battery or from this busse?
