The photo below of an Amphenol 32-7S connector shell shows two insulator half's and the #16 and #12 socket contacts. The #16 socket contact is held captive by a step in the bottom of the hole in the larger top section (to the right) while the #12 socket contact has a bulge near the solder cup which fits in the relief shown in the bottom section (to the left).
Drilling or filing the #16 holes to accept a #12 socket is not a problem but going the other way would be an issue since there is no easy way to make the #16 socket contact captive and prevent it from protruding from the shell.
Michael is probably right in that it would be faster to drill out the shell to accept a #12 contact but I still feel that one slip would ruin the shell. A Swiss file would take longer but would be easier to control the cut.
I wonder if the photo will pass muster with the mailman reflector?

Jim

If you drill out one contact hole, what do you insert to make contact with the mating pin ? What am i missing ?
I have to admit, i would have first thought of the homebrew plug route, altho that was no doubt envisioned for simpler plugs.
