In actuality, critical information can be – and in fact was – deduced by studying German equipment nameplates during WWII. The Germans, being German, insisted that everything be numbered consecutively. They also stamped dates on many internal components. By correlating the date with the serial number it was possible to deduce the rate of production; and by finding the highest serial number, the total production run.
