I am asking for advice from someone who has experience with the GRC-9 receiver.

I bought a rec section to replace one that apparently has been France – style

“de-milled”, that is, the tuning knob was struck by a hammer. Nothing against France,

it’s just that this is where this was most often done. ( Not positive about that. )

The rec i bought, looks good, BUT….the tuning knob only moves the dial erratically and

maybe 100 kHz -+ either side. I cannot see what’s directly behind the knob. The rec

tuning cap does have gears, but maybe there’s one of those ‘pinch drives’ to the tuning

disc rim. I have never taken the front panel off one of these receivers. Which is do-able

but not my idea of real fun.

Some years back, i sold a GRC-9 rec section to someone who needed one, for a very

reasonable price. I can’t undo that. Who knew ?

So – any advice ? About what may be the prob or what needed to correct ?

Oh, BTW, i found that an LED in series with the B+ line MUCH improves the dial lighting.

It is always on, and subtracts only < 3 volts from the B+. I also found a 3-watch cell holder

works fine to replace the bias cell, which is always dead. I may still have some of the holders.

I recall reading an issue of ‘Radio Bygones’ years ago about some comm station in French
Indochina. The report was that the station operator was unhappy with the U.K. B2 set he was

using. This was finally replaced with a GRC-9 and he was overjoyed. I didn’t think the B2 was

that bad a set. Of course – no VFO, and i don’t think it will drive a speaker, but it’s not some

basic Novice set from an ARRL book.
