Of course back then we all used old FT-243 crystals that could take it. In fact some transmitters used regenerative crystal oscillators and such that intentionally generated a lot of power so an output tuned circuit could select the desired harmonic to get mulit-band coverage without multiplier stages.
I've found that the small modern crystals like Steve sells work fine in any MOPA type rig, and in things like QRP-level Jones push-pull circuits as well. Then there's the old-school technique of putting a small incandescent lamp in series with the crystal. The idea was that the positive temperature coefficient of the lamp would limit the current to a safe level to protect the crystal.
