Was "FN" the Elmer for Joe and Judy in 73 mag? I actually used one of his tricks when I gave Novice Morse tests. He told Joe and Judy that he would send 5 minutes of 5WPM Morse as a warmup exercise, then tell them at the end that they had passed their code tests. Worked for my students as well.

Yep that's right, Gene.  The guy who taught the code for my Novice class was a carpenter and he added one of his rafter square clamps to the arm of his bug to slow it down to 7-8 WPM.   After he examined our copy one night and announced that we all just "passed" our Novice code test, the weight came off and the speed went up ;-)
