I believe it is these two editions of QST that contain articles about rolling your own crystals. In the article is info on how to inspect and select Brazilian quartz, how to look at the crystal to determine the angle to cut, even for overtones, a design of a saw to cut the slivers which used nothing but a copper toothless disc, and that secret of the ages, the formula for determining the thickness of the cut to get close to the target freq. I have this little gadget, pic attached, that you could use for testing that consists of a way to clamp the quartz in the holder, maybe this was a testers crystal making aid, don't know but sure looks like a quick way to test the element.
