I finally decided to pitch all my old carbon resistors- two large coffee cans.

Wasting a day chasing phantoms because I used a “NOS” carbon 47K which was actually 867k was not fun, since *time* is more valuable than 

Any Earthly thing.

Confirmed to myself before consigning them to oblivion:  about one in each ten-resistor lot was anywhere close to spec.

Buying new is a wise investment.
