Perhaps, but one has to have some skill beyond flicking a switch from AM to sideband.  Then there is the wait for the oscillators to settle down, adjusting the BFO and riding the RF gain control.  Too complicated for some, I guess.

How much better would AM be if the same attention to detail was given to AM reception as was given to SSB?  John P. Costas was right.
